Classical music has played a central role in German music education since at least the second half of the 20th century. However, in more recent music pedagogical discourse, classical music remains a controversial topic. But what do music teachers think about classical music as a subject for music education? This topic has not yet been systematically researched in German-speaking music education.
In this qualitative-empirical study, eight semi-structured interviews were conducted to address the question of how music teachers perceive classical music in music education. The data was evaluated using the Grounded Theory Methodology. The theory developed from the study indicates that music teachers have varying objectives when using classical music in music education. However, they generally consider it unfamiliar to their students. To address this situation, music teachers develop various methods and strategies. These can be categorized into three approaches for dealing with the unfamiliarity of classical music: avoidance, reduction/relativization, and utilization.
The study's findings are contextualized within the framework of foreignness theory, music didactics, and transformational educational theory. This dissertation contributes to the field of music education in classical music, laying the groundwork for further theoretical, empirical, and didactic research.
While Virtual Reality has been around for decades it gained new life in recent years. The release of the first consumer hardware devices allows fully immersive and affordable VR for the user at home. This availability lead to a new focus of research on technical problems as well as psychological effects. The concepts of presence, describing the feeling of being in the virtual place, body ownership and their impact are central topics in research for a long time and still not fully understood.
To enable further research in the area of Mixed Reality, we want to introduce a framework that integrates the users body and surroundings inside a visual coherent virtual environment. As one of two main aspects we want to merge real and virtual objects to a shared environment in a way such that they are no longer visually distinguishable. To achieve this the main focus is not supposed to be on a high graphical fidelity but on a simplified representation of reality. The essential question is, what level of visual realism is necessary to create a believable mixed reality environment that induces a sense of presence in the user? The second aspect considers the integration of virtual persons. Can characters be recorded and replayed in a way such that they are perceived as believable entities of the world and therefore act as a part of the users environment?
The purpose of this thesis was the development of a framework called Mixed Reality Embodiment Platform. This inital system implements fundamental functionalities to be used as a basis for future extensions to the framework. We also provide a first application that enables user studies to evaluate the framework and contribute to aforementioned research questions.
This thesis describes the conception, implementation and evaluation of a collaborative multiplayer game for preschoolers for mobile devices.
The main object of this thesis is to find out, if mobile devices like smartphones and tablet computers are suitable for the interaction of children. In order to develop this kind of game relevant aspects were researched. On this basis a game was designed which was finally tested by preschoolers.
The goal of this thesis is to create and develop a concept for a mobile city guide combined with game-based contents.
The application is intented to support flexible and independent exploration of the city of Koblenz.
Based on the geographical data, historical information for and interesting stories of various places were provided in this application. These informations are combined with playful elements in order to create a motivating concept.
Therefore, related approaches were examined and, combined with own ideas, a new concept has been developed. This concept has been prototypically implemented as an Android application and afterwards evaluated by 15 test persons. A questionnaire was used to examine the operability, the motivation of game patterns and the additional value of the application.
Topic models are a popular tool to extract concepts of large text corpora. These text corpora tend to contain hidden meta groups. The size relation of these groups is frequently imbalanced. Their presence is often ignored when applying a topic model. Therefore, this thesis explores the influence of such imbalanced corpora on topic models.
The influence is tested by training LDA on samples with varying size relations. The samples are generated from data sets containing a large group differences i.e language difference and small group differences i.e. political orientation. The predictive performance on those imbalanced corpora is judged using perplexity.
The experiments show that the presence of groups in training corpora can influence the prediction performance of LDA. The impact varies due to various factors, including language-specific perplexity scores. The group-related prediction performance changes for groups when varying the relative group sizes. The actual change varies between data sets.
LDA is able to distinguish between different latent groups in document corpora if differences between groups are large enough, e.g. for groups with different languages. The proportion of group-specific topics is under-proportional to the share of the group in the corpus and relatively smaller for minorities.
We present a non-linear camera pose estimator, which is able to handle a combined input of point and line feature correspondences. For three or more correspondences, the estimator works on any arbitrary number and choice of the feature type, which provides an estimation of the pose on a preferably small and flexible amount of 2D-3D correspondences. We also give an analysis of different minimization techniques, parametrizations of the pose data, and of error measurements between 2D and 3D data. These will be tested for the usage of point features, lines and the combination case. The result shows the most stable and fast working non-linear parameter set for pose estimation in model-based tracking.
The development of a pan-European public E-Procurement system is an important target of the European Union to enhance the efficiency, transparency and competitiveness of public procurement procedures conducted within the European single market. A great obstacle for cross-border electronic procurement is the heterogeneity of national procurement systems in terms of technical, organizational and legal differences. To overcome this obstacle the European Commission funds several initiatives that contribute to the aim of achieving interoperability for pan-European public procurement. Pan European Public Procurement OnLine (PEPPOL) is one of these initiatives that aims at piloting an interoperable pan-European E-Procurement solution to support businesses and public purchasing entities from different member states to conduct their procurement processes electronically.rnrnAs interoperability and inter-connection of distributed heterogeneous information systems are the major requirements in the European procurement domain, and the VCD sub-domain in particular, service-oriented architecture (SOA) seems to provide a promising approach to realize such an architecture, as it promotes loose coupling and interoperability. This master thesis therefore discusses the SOA approach and how its concepts, methodologies and technologies can be used for the development of interoperable IT systems for electronic public procurement. This discussion is enhanced through a practical application of the discussed SOA methodologies by conceptualizing and prototyping of a sub-system derived from the overall system domain of the Virtual Company Dossier. For that purpose, important aspects of interoperability and related standards and technologies will be examined and put into the context of public electronic procurement. Furthermore, the paradigm behind SOA will be discussed, including the derivation of a top-down development methodology for service-oriented systems.
New media are continually gaining importance in society. This process also has an increasing influence on developments in the field of education. Due to the use of computers as an integral part of schooling, new possibilities with regard to the organisation of learning processes arise. In this context, it is of great significance that appropriate computer applications for the respective learning group be prepared, so that justifiable use of computers in lessons can take place. Furthermore, efficient integration of computers requires changes in spatial organisation, in teaching methodology and in the role of the teacher. Such reflection and re-orientation are the essential basis for meaningful usage of new media in teaching and learning processes. An initial aim of this thesis is an empirical analysis of the situation regarding the usage of computers in geometry lessons in primary schools, based on a regional survey. The evaluation gives information as to how intensively the computer is used in the learning process and shows us which factors determine the use of computers in geometry lessons.
The results are an empirical foundation for the development of a computer-based learning environment called "Geolizi" (the second aim of my study). Within this learning environment, the pupils should work independently on the topics "mirror-imaged figures" and "the construction of rectangles and squares", with the help of the computer. During this process, hands-on media, traditional drawing instruments and interactive worksheets are available to the pupils. The computer (with its appropriate applications) takes over different functions in this learning process. Testing of this learning environment ("Geolizi") took place in several primary school classes, within the scope of formative and summative evaluation. With the help of questionnaires filled in by the pupils, the usability of the individual elements was tested. Based on a pre-post-investigation design, an attempt has been made to discover possible changes in the attitude of teachers regarding the usage of computers in the teaching of elementary geometry.
The results of this test phase, together with the evaluation of the questionnaires, lead to the founded presumption that usage of the multimedia-based learning environment " Geolizi " could result in greater use of computers in geometry lessons. All in all, the developed learning environment demonstrates an interesting possibility of how to use computers in the teaching of geometry at primary schools, thus making an important contribution to an independent, individualised learning process.
In order to simulate realistic motion sequences, muscles must be able to be modelled anatomically correct. Yet it is only possible in SimPack to define muscles as a straight line between two points. This thesis presents an approach where ellipses can be defined through which a muscle must pass. The main problem is to calculate the length of this muscle through the ellipses. An algorithm is presented that calculates the shortest path of a muscle path through this ellipses. This algorithm is then implemented in Fortran 90 and integrated into an existing muscle model in SimPack.
Aim of this study was the assessment of the conservation status of vascular plants in East African rain forests with the background of establishing an ex-situ culture of local endangered plants at the Botanic Garden of the Maseno University (Kenya).
For a sustainable implementation it was first necessary to learn more about the general species inventory, especially concerning species composition and abundance under human impact, and to assess the conservation priority of each plant species. Representative for East African rain forests, Kakamega Forest (Kenya) and Budongo Forest (Uganda) were selected to serve as model forests.
Beside the general floristic investigations including all vascular plants, a special focus was laid on vascular epiphytes and their vulnerability to forest disturbance. To assess the conservation priority of the plants, a rating system was developed based on seven threat criteria. By carrying out first plant collections, the exsitu culture in Maseno Botanic Garden was already initiated.
Water is used in a way as if it were available infinitely. Droughts, increased rainfall or flooding already lead to water shortages and, thus, deprive entire population groups of the basis of their livelihoods. There is a growing fear that conflicts over water will increase, especially in arid climate zones, because life without water - whether for humans, animals or plants - is not possible.
More than 60 % of the African population depend on land and water resources for their livelihoods through pastoralism, fishing and farming. The water levels of rivers and lakes are decreasing. Hence, the rural population which is dependent on land and water move towards water-rich and humid areas. This internal migration increases the pressure on available water resources. Driven by the desire to strengthen the economic development, African governments align their political agendas with the promotion of macro international and national economic projects.
This doctoral thesis examines the complex interrelationships between water shortages, governance, vulnerability, adaptive capacity and violent and non-violent conflicts at Lake Naivasha in Kenya and Lake Wamala in Uganda. In order to satisfy the overall complexity, this doctoral thesis combines various theoretical and empirical aspects in which a variety of methods are applied to different geographical regions, across disciplines, and cultural and political boundaries.
The investigation reveals that Lake Naivasha is more affected by violent conflicts than Lake Wamala. Reasons for this include population growth, historically grown ethnic conflicts, corruption and the preferential treatment of national and international economic actors. The most common conflict response tools are raiding and the blockage of water access. However, deathly encounters, destruction of property and cattle slaughtering are increasingly used to gain access to water and land.
The insufficient implementation of the political system and the governments’ prioritization to foster economic development results, on the one hand, in the commercialization of water resources and increases, on the other hand, non-violent conflict between national and sub-national political actors. While corruption, economic favours and patronage defuse this conflict, resource access becomes more difficult for the local population. Resulting thereof, a final hypothesis is developed which states that the localization of the political conflict aggravates the water situation for the local population and, thereby, favours violent conflicts over water access and water use in water-rich areas.
The goal of this work is evaluation and optimization of several eye-tracking algorithms for estimation of relevant features regarding accuracy. The extracted features are pupil- and glintcenters. The algorithms are applicable to off the shelf cameras. A synthetic model of the eye was modified and utilized. The model was used to supply ground truth for the evaluation of the methods.
This study explored the question whether greenhouse gas mitigation projects in Namibia could be initiated through local economic development programmes. In particular, research was done on whether the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol could play an essential role in the promotion of such mitigation projects.
In a first step supporting and inhibiting factors (potential for mitigation projects, business and investment climate, institutions, etc.) were discussed, which have a negative or positive influence on mitigation projects. In a second step the mind-set of climate and energy experts as well as of local economic development experts and practitioners was analysed with regard to the research questions. To this end, 229 questionnaires, 28 interviews and the output of a focus group discussion with 20 participants were evaluated. Additionally, the author conducted a real life case study to investigate the practicability of initiating greenhouse gas mitigation projects through local economic development efforts. Parallel to the development of an economic development strategy in the Namibian region of Otjozondjupa, the potential for greenhouse gas mitigation projects was explored. Based on the outcome of this investigation project ideas were developed and their potential socio-economic impact was evaluated. Promising projects were then included into the development strategy.
Due to various factors such as the complexity of CDM, low greenhouse gas emissions in Namibia, the low price of emission rights and insufficient financial means it is unlikely that CDM projects can be initiated through local economic development initiatives in Namibia. However, many stakeholders consider the idea of interlinking mitigation projects and local economic development initiatives favourably as long as such projects support the broader objectives of those initiatives. This research has shown that locally initiated mitigation projects do not contribute much to employment or income generation at the local level in Namibia. Thus, national strategic objectives should be considered, such as improving access to electricity to all strata of society or becoming less dependent on electricity imports. This requires, however, that local economic development strategies also cover the energy sector, that local governments are willing and capacitated to initiate mitigation projects, that national and local public institutions work together more closely, that national and local economic framework conditions are improved so as to attract private investments, and that the experiences and interests of the relevant stakeholders are considered throughout the project development process.
The stands surveyed are among the last closed canopy forests in Rwanda. Their exploration began in the early twentieth century and is still ongoing. Previous studies were mainly concerned with plant sociological issues and presented references to environmental factors in anecdotal form, at best using indirect ordination methods. The present study undertakes a classification of the vegetation with numerical methods and establishes quantitative relationships of the species’ distributional structure to environmental parameters using spatially explicit procedures. For this purpose, 94 samples were taken in 100 m² hexagonal plots. Of these, 70 samples are from Nyungwe, 14 are from Gishwati, and 10 are from Cyamudongo. Given the homogeneity of the terrain and vegetation, all vegetation types encountered, all types of stands, and all vegetation strata were included. The beta diversity is expressed by an average Bray-Curtis dissimilarity of 0.92, and in JOST’S (2007) numbers equivalents, 37.90 equally likely samples would be needed to represent the diversity encountered. Within the survey, 1198 species in 127 families were collected. Among the specimens are 6 local endemics and 40 Albertine Rift endemics. Resulting from UPGMA and FCM-NC, 20 to 40 plant communities were established depending on the level of resolution. It can be inferred by means of a Mantel correlogram that the mean zone of influence of a single vegetation stand, as sampled by a 100 m² plot in Nyungwe Forest, ranges between 0.016 and 3.42 km. Of the communities compiled using FCM-NC and UPGMA, 50% consist of individual samples. Beyond undersampling, natural small-scale discontinuities are reflected by this result. Partial db-RDA resulted in an explained variation of 9.60% and 14.41% for environmental and soil factors, respectively. Utilising variation partitioning analyses based on CCA and tb-RDA, between 21.70% and 37.80% of the variation in vegetation data could be explained. The spatially structured fraction of these parameters accounts for between 30.50% and 49.80% of the explained variation (100%). The purely environmental parameters account for a share of 10.30% to 16.30%, whereby the lower limit originates from the unimodal approach and has lost its statistical significance. The soil variables, also after partial analysis, account for a share of 19.00% to 35.70%. While the residual impact of the climatic parameters is hardly significant, the effect of the soil properties is prevalent. In general, the spatially structured fraction of the parameters is predominant here. While on the broad-scale climatic factors, the altitude a.s.l. and the geology are determining factors, some soil parameters and matrix components also show their impacts here. In the mid-range of the scale, it is the forest matrix, the soil types, and the geology that determine species distribution. While in the fine range of the scale, some unrecorded parameters seem to have an effect, there are also neutral processes that determine species composition.
“Mittelstand” businesses are the backbone of the German economy. To operate effectively, these businesses require sufficient financing provided through adequate financing instruments. Yet, which characteristics do capital seekers value in adequate financing instruments? Despite the macroeconomic relevance of the topic, only few empirical studies exist to this date, which examine the financing behaviour of “Mittelstand”. For the paper at hand, all PREPS financed German businesses were asked to fill out an online survey. PREPS is a standardized mezzanine financing instrument, which was offered to “Mittelstand” businesses with a high degree of credit worthiness - primarily to finance business growth. PREPS financed businesses are of particular interest for this research as they can choose from the greatest variety of financing options amongst their peers due to their size and credit worthiness. Financing instruments differ in terms of rights and obligations associated with them. Depending on their design, financing contracts can fulfil a variety of functions beyond the obvious supply of liquidity, such as financial transformation, influencing of behaviours, and signalling private information. The paper at hand suggests that the businesses in question selected the same financing instrument, however, for different reasons. Furthermore, the degree of appreciation for certain characteristics of the financing instrument varies with business and situation specific context. When exploring individual hypotheses on how individual factors influence this degree of appreciation for certain financing characteristics, this paper builds on core capital structure theories as well as recent empirical insights in regards to financing behaviour. In addition, the paper examines several explorative hypotheses.
Mathematical modeling describes the processes being performed by people who try to solve real world problems mathematically or who try to solve mathematical word problems. The literature on mathematical modeling is based on the so-called modeling cycle (Blum, 2003), which consists of five substages, that describe the course of the problem-solving process. As a first step (Structuring), the problem situation is being understood by the modeler and the most crucial elements of the problem are identified. The modeler then translates those elements to a mathematical language (Mathematising), where they are now presented in the form of equations, numbers, operators and symbols, i.e. in the form of a mathematical model. In the third step (Solving), the model is used to come to a mathematical solution to the problem, which in the next step (Interpretation) is then re-translated into real-world information and gives an answer to the question that has been raised in the problem. The last step describes the Validation of the whole problem-solving process. If the modeler comes to the conclusion that his solution is wrong or not optimal, the modeling cycle starts from the beginning. The modeling cycle functions as a descriptive model of modeling processes, because it describes how modeling is carried out by students. On the other hand, it also functions as a normative model, because it makes prescriptions on how one should behave, when solving problems mathematically. However, there do not exist any empirical studies to prove neither the descriptive nor the normative character of the modeling cycle. This thesis shows, that the suitability as a descriptive model can only be affirmed with restrictions. Validation could not be observed in any of the subjects taking part in the first study and the sequence of the remaining four processes also diverged from the theoretically postulated order. A revised version of the modeling cycle as a recursive model is therefore proposed. In the second study, the suitability as a normative model was explored, by separately assessing the four processes Structuring, Mathematising, Solving and Interpretation with newly designed items. The four scales were validated with several criteria, one of them the ability to solve modeling tasks, which confirms the normative function of the modeling cycle. In order to help promote modeling competency in young learners, it is necessary to find ways for diagnosing modeling competency as early as at the end of primary school. By generating items for the four sub-competencies Structuring, Mathematising, Solving and Interpretation a basis has been founded to do this in an objective, reliabel and valid way.

Modern Internet and Intranet techniques, such as Web services and virtualization, facilitate the distributed processing of data providing improved flexibility. The gain in flexibility also incurs disadvantages. Integrated workflows forward and distribute data between departments and across organizations. The data may be affected by privacy laws, contracts, or intellectual property rights. Under such circumstances of flexible cooperations between organizations, accounting for the processing of data and restricting actions performed on the data may be legally and contractually required. In the Internet and Intranet, monitoring mechanisms provide means for observing and auditing the processing of data, while policy languages constitute a mechanism for specifying restrictions and obligations.
In this thesis, we present our contributions to these fields by providing improvements for auditing and restricting the data processing in distributed environments. We define formal qualities of auditing methods used in distributed environments. Based on these qualities, we provide a novel monitoring solution supporting a data-centric view on the distributed data processing. We present a solution for provenance-aware policies and a formal specification of obligations offering a procedure to decide whether obligatory processing steps can be met in the future.
The processing of data is often restricted by contractual and legal requirements for protecting privacy and IPRs. Policies provide means to control how and by whom data is processed. Conditions of policies may depend on the previous processing of the data. However, existing policy languages do not provide means to express such conditions. In this work we present a formal model and language allowing for specifying conditions based on the history of data processing. We base the model and language on XACML.

Agricultural intensification is leading to a severe decline in farmland biodiversity worldwide. The resulting landscape simplification through the expansion of monocultures and removal of non-crop habitats has a major impact on arthropod communities in agricultural landscapes. While arable fields are often highly disturbed and ephemeral habitats that are unsuitable for many species, non-crop habitats in agroecosystems can provide important refugia. The creation of non-crop habitats through agri-environmental schemes (AES) in intensive agricultural landscapes, such as the ‘Maifeld’ region in western Germany, is intended to mitigate the negative effects of agricultural intensification, although the effectiveness of these measures for nature conservation is still controversial. Therefore, this work focuses on the taxonomic and functional diversity of beetles (Coleoptera) and spiders (Araneida), being important providers of ecosystem services, between wheat fields and different non-crop habitats, namely grassy field margins adjacent to wheat and oilseed rape fields, small- and large-scale set-aside areas sown with wildflowers, and permanent grassland fallows. Arthropods were collected between 2019 and 2020 using pitfall traps and suction sampling. Land-use type influenced beetle and spider diversity in the study area, with significantly higher values in grassland fallows than wheat fields. Surprisingly, species diversity differed little among all non-crop habitats, but all harboured distinct species assemblages. In particular, large long-term grassland fallows showed the largest within-group variation of beetle and spider assemblages and represented important habitats, especially for habitat specialists and threatened species, likely due to their variable soil moisture and complex habitat structure. In contrast, the homogeneous arthropod assemblages of wheat fields exhibited lower trait richness and were dominated by a few predatory species adapted to such disturbed, man-made habitats. Interestingly, all conservation measures complemented each other in that they contributed in different ways to supporting beetles and spiders in agricultural landscapes. Even small-scale non-crop habitats and existing habitat boundaries in an agricultural matrix appear to be valuable habitats for farmland arthropods by enhancing taxonomic diversity. Field margins and small wildflower-sown patches can link isolated non-crop habitats and contribute to a heterogeneous agricultural landscape. Consequently, a combination of various small- and large-scale greening measures leads to increased compositional and configurational landscape heterogeneity, resulting in improved beetle and spider diversity. Considering the ongoing loss of farmland biodiversity worldwide, agri-environmental schemes should be promoted in the future, as they are particularly important for arthropod conservation in intensive agricultural landscapes such as the Maifeld region.
The main goal of this paper is to ascertain, if neural networks (especially LSTM) are helpful in predicting processes by making predictions as accurately as possible.
TensorFlow is the used framework in Python to build recurrent neural networks. Two networks are built, whereby one is used for training and the other one for prediction.
Used datasets contain several processes with several events each. With those processes, the network ist trained and afterwards, the parameters are saved. The network for prediction uses these parameters to make predictions.
The neural network is able to make clear predictions about subsequent events. Even branches can be predicted.
When developed further, integration in other programs is possible. It is recommended to use unique names for the events or to rename them.
While reading this sentence, you probably gave (more or less deliberately) instructions to approximately 100 to 200 muscles of your body. A sceptical face or a smile, your fingers scrolling through the text or holding a printed version of this work, holding your head, sitting, and much more.
All these processes take place almost automatically, so they seem to be no real achievement. In the age of digitalization it is a defined goal to transfer human (psychological and physiological) behavior to machines (robots). However, it turns out that it is indeed laborious to obtain human facial expression or walking from robots. To optimize this transfer, a deeper understanding of a muscle's operating principle is needed (and of course an understanding of the human brain, which will, however, not be part of this thesis).
A human skeletal muscle can be shortened willingly, but not lengthened, thereto it takes an antagonist. The muscle's change in length is dependent on the incoming stimulus from the central nervous system, the current length of the muscle itself, and certain muscle--specific quantities (parameters) such as the maximum force. Hence, a muscle can be mathematically described by a differential equation (or more exactly a coupled differential--algebraic system, DAE), whose structure will be revealed in the following chapters. The theory of differential equations is well-elaborated. A multitude of applicable methods exist that may not be known by muscle modelers. The purpose of this work is to link the methods from applied mathematics to the actual application in biomechanics.
The first part of this thesis addresses stability theory. Let us remember the prominent example from middle school physics, in which the resting position of a ball was obviously less susceptible towards shoves when lying in a bowl rather than balancing at the tip of a hill. Similarly, a dynamical (musculo-skeletal) system can attain equilibrium states that react differently towards perturbations.
We are going to compute and classify these equilibria.
In the second part, we investigate the influence of individual parameters on model equations or more exactly their solutions. This method is known as sensitivity analysis.
Take for example the system "car" containing a value for the quantity "pressure on the break pedal while approaching a traffic light". A minor deviation of this quantity upward or downward may lead to an uncomfortable, abrupt stop or even to a collision, instead of a smooth stop with a sufficient gap.
The considered muscle model contains over 20 parameters that, if changed slightly, have varying effects on the model equation solutions at different instants of time. We will investigate the sensitivity of those parameters regarding different sub--models, as well as the whole model among different dynamical boundary conditions.
The third and final part addresses the \textit{optimal control} problem (OCP).
The muscle turns a nerve impulse (input or control) into a length change and therefore a force response (output). This forward process is computable by solving the respective DAE. The reverse direction is more difficult to manage. As an everyday example, the OCP is present regarding self-parking cars, where a given path is targeted and the controls are the position of the
steering wheel as well as the gas pedal.
We present two methods of solving OCPs in muscle modeling: the first is a conjunction of variational calculus and optimization in function spaces, the second is a surrogate-based optimization.
Counts of SARS-CoV-2-related deaths have been key numbers for justifying severe political, social and economical measures imposed by authorities world-wide. A particular focus thereby was the concomitant excess mortality (EM), i.e. fatalities above the expected all-cause mortality (AM). Recent studies, inter alia by the WHO, estimated the SARS-CoV-2-related EM in Germany between 2020 and 2021 as high as 200 000. In this study, we attempt to scrutinize these numbers by putting them into the context of German AM since the year 2000. We propose two straightforward, age-cohort-dependent models to estimate German AM for the ‘Corona pandemic’ years, as well as the corresponding flu seasons, out of historic data. For Germany, we find overall negative EM of about −18 500 persons for the year 2020, and a minor positive EM of about 7000 for 2021, unveiling that officially reported EM counts are an exaggeration. In 2022, the EM count is about 41 200. Further, based on NAA-test-positive related death counts, we are able to estimate how many Germans have died due to rather than with CoViD-19; an analysis not provided by the appropriate authority, the RKI. Through 2020 and 2021 combined, our due estimate is at no more than 59 500. Varying NAA test strategies heavily obscured SARS-CoV-2-related EM, particularly within the second year of the proclaimed pandemic. We compensated changes in test strategies by assuming that age-cohort-specific NAA-conditional mortality rates during the first pandemic year reflected SARS-CoV-2-characteristic constants.

Artificial neural networks is a popular field of research in artificial intelli-
gence. The increasing size and complexity of huge models entail certain
problems. The lack of transparency of the inner workings of a neural net-
work makes it difficult to choose efficient architectures for different tasks.
It proves to be challenging to solve these problems, and with a lack of in-
sightful representations of neural networks, this state of affairs becomes
entrenched. With these difficulties in mind a novel 3D visualization tech-
nique is introduced. Attributes for trained neural networks are estimated
by utilizing established methods from the area of neural network optimiza-
tion. Batch normalization is used with fine-tuning and feature extraction to
estimate the importance of different parts of the neural network. A combi-
nation of the importance values with various methods like edge bundling,
ray tracing, 3D impostor and a special transparency technique results in a
3D model representing a neural network. The validity of the extracted im-
portance estimations is demonstrated and the potential of the developed
visualization is explored.
The presented study was motivated by the dynamic phenomena observed in basic catalytic surface reactions, especially by bi- and tristability, and the interactions between these stable states. In this regard, three reaction-diffusion models were developed and examined using bifurcation theory and numerical simulations.
A first model was designed to extend the bistable CO oxidation on Ir(111) to include hydrogen and its oxidation. The differential equation system was analyzed within the framework of bifurcation theory, revealing three branches of stable solutions.
One state is characterized by high formation rates (upper rate state, UR), while the other two branches display low formation rates (lower rate (LR) \& very low rate (VLR) states).
The overlapping branches form the shape of a `swallowtail', the curve of saddle-node bifurcations forming two cusps. Increasing the temperature leads to a subsequent unfolding and hence decreases the system complexity.
A series of numerical simulations representing possible experiments was conducted to illustrate the experimental accessibility (or the lack) of said states. Relaxation experiments show partially long decay times. Quasistatic scanning illustrates the existence of all three states within the tristable regime and their respective conversion once crossing a fold.
A first attempt regarding the state dominance in reaction-diffusion fronts was done. While UR seems to dominate in 1D, a 2D time-evolution shows that LR invades the interphase between UR and VLR.
Subsequently, a generic monospecies mock model was used for the comprehensive study of reaction-diffusion fronts. A quintic polynomial as reaction term was chosen, derived by the sixth-order potential associated with the `butterfly bifurcation'. This ensures up to three stable solutions($u_{0}$,$u_{1}$,$u_{2}$), depending on the four-dimensional parameter space.
The model was explored extensively, identifying regions with similar behaviors.
A term for the front velocity connecting two stable states was derived, depending only on the relative difference of the states' potential wells.
Equipotential curves were found, where the front velocity vanishes of a given front. Numerical simulations on a two-dimensional, finite disk using a triangulated mesh supported these findings.
Additionally, the front-splitting instability was observed for certain parameters. The front solution $u_{02}$ becomes unstable and divides into $u_{01}$ and $u_{12}$, exhibiting different front velocities. A good estimate for the limit of the front splitting region was given and tested using time evolutions.
Finally, the established mock model was modified from continuous to discrete space, utilizing a simple domain in 1D and three different lattices in 2D (square, hexagonal, triangular).
For low diffusivities or large distances between coupling nodes, fronts can become pinned, if the parameters are within range of the equipotential lines. This phenomenon is known as propagation failure and its extent in parameter space was explored in 1D. In 2D, an estimate was given for remarkable front orientations respective to the lattice using a pseudo-2D approximation. Near the pinning region, front velocities differ significantly from the continuous expectation as the shape of the curve potential becomes significant. Factors that decide the size and shape of the pinning regions are the coupling strength, the lattice, the front orientation relative to the lattice, and the front itself. The bifurcation diagram shows a snaking curve in the pinning region, each alternating branch representing a stable or unstable frozen front solution. Numerical simulations supported the observations concerning propagation failure and lattice dependence.
Furthermore, the influence of front orientation on the front velocity was explored in greater detail, showing that fronts with certain lattice-dependent orientations are more or less prone to propagation failure. This leads to the possibility of pattern formation, reflecting the lattice geometry. An attempt to quantify the front movement depending on angular front orientation has shown reasonable results and good agreement with the pseudo-2D approach.
The increasing application of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nTiO2) entails an increased risk regarding their release to surface water bodies, where they likely co-occur with other anthropogenic stressors, such as heavy metals. Their co-occurrence may lead to an adsorption of the metal ions onto the particles. These nanoparticles often sediment, due to their agglomeration, and thus pose a risk for pelagic or benthic species. The combined toxicity of nTiO2 and heavy metals is likely influenced by the properties of both stressors (since they may alter their interaction) and by environmental parameters (e.g., organic matter, pH, ionic strength) affecting their fate.
These issues were not yet systematically examined by the recent literature. Therefore, this thesis investigated the influence of nTiO2-products with differing crystalline phase composition on the toxicity of copper (as representative for heavy metals) in presence of different organic matters using the pelagic test organism Daphnia magna.
Moreover, the duration of the stressors` interaction (=aging) likely modulates the combined toxicity. Hence, the influence of nTiO2 on copper toxicity after aging as a function of environmental parameters (i.e., organic matter, pH, ionic strength) was additionally investigated.
Finally, the transferability of the major findings to benthic species was examined using Gammarus fossarum. The present thesis discovered a reduction of the copper toxicity facilitated by nTiO2 for all assessed scenarios, while its magnitude was determined by the surface area and structure of nTiO2, the quantity and quality of organic matter as well as the aging of both stressors. The general copper toxicity reduction by nTiO2 was also transferable to benthic species, despite their potentially increased exposure due to the sedimentation of nTiO2 with adsorbed copper. These observations suggest the application of nTiO2 as remediation agent, but potential side effects (e.g., chronic toxicity, reactive oxygen species formation) require further investigations. Moreover, questions regarding the transferability to other stressors (e.g., different heavy metals, organic chemicals) and the fate of stressors adsorbed to nTiO2 in aquatic ecosystems remain open.
This paper critically examines the Google Calendar. For this purpose, the offered functions of the core product are studied on privacy aspects. On one hand, it is identified, to which extent the product could infringe the users" privacy, on the other accuring risks are discussed. Furthermore, the functions in terms of their use for both, the service provider Google and for the user, are considered. A detailed analysis demonstrates the critical aspects, in which we have to decide between privacy and functionality. The identified solutions to minimize discussed risks of IT security mechanisms, are presented, discussed and analyzed in terms of their feasibility. Afterwards the individual solutions are summarized in a security concept and other requirements are explained. Finally, a Firefox-Addon which implements the described solution concept should be created, to resolve the existing weaknesses to the best of its ability. Ultimately, the functionality of the addon with technical implementation is illustrated in detail.
The growing numbers of breeding rooks (Corvus frugilegus) in the city of Landau (Rhineland- Palatinate, Germany) increase the potential for conflict between rooks and humans, which is mainly associated with noise and faeces. Therefore, the aim of this work is a better understanding of the breeding tree selection of the rook in order to develop options for action and management in the future.
Part I of this thesis provides general background information on the rook and includes mapping of the rookeries in the Anterior Palatinate and South Palatinate including Landau in the year 2020. That mapping revealed that the number of rural colonies has decreased, while the number of urban colonies has increased in the study area in the last few years. In line with current literature, tree species and tree size were important criteria for breeding tree selection. However, the mapping showed that additional factors must be important as well.
Therefore, as rooks seem to often breed along traffic axes, Part II of this thesis examines how temperature, artificial light and noise, which are all linked to traffic axes, affect the breeding tree selection of the rook in the city of Landau. The following three hypotheses are developed: (1) manually selected breeding trees (Bm) have a warmer microclimate than manually selected non-breeding trees (Nm) or randomly selected non-breeding trees (Nr), (2) Bm are exposed to a higher light level than Nm or Nr and (3) Bm are exposed to a higher noise level than Nm or Nr. To test these hypotheses, 15 Bm, 13 Nm and 16 Nr are investigated.
The results show that Bm were exposed to more noise than both types of non-breeding trees (μBm, noise = 36.52481 dB, μNm, noise = 31.27229 dB, μNr, noise = 29.17417 dB) where the difference between Bm and Nr was significant. In addition, there was a tendency for Bm to be exposed to less light (μBm, light = 0.356 lx) than Nm (μNm, light = 0.4107692 lx) and significantly less light than Nr (μNr, light = 1.995 lx), while temperature did not differ between the groups (μBm, temp = 16.90549 °C, μNm, temp = 16.93118 °C, μNr, temp = 17.28639 °C).
This study shows for the first time that rooks prefer trees which are exposed to low light levels and high noise levels, i.e. more intense traffic noise, for breeding. It can only be speculated that the cause of this is lower enemy pressure at such sites. The fact that temperature does not seem to have any influence on breeding tree selection may be due to only small temperature differences at nest height, which might be compensated by breeding behaviour. Consequently, in the long term one management approach could be to divert traffic from inner-city areas, especially schools and hospitals, to bypasses. If tree genera suitable for rooks, such as plane trees, are planted along the bypasses, those sites could provide suitable alternative habitats to inner-city breeding locations, which become less attractive for breeding due to noise reduction. In the short term in addition to locally implemented repellent measures the most effective approach is to strengthen rook acceptance among the population. However, further research is needed to verify the results of this thesis and to gain further insights into rook breeding site selection in order to develop effective management measures.

(2020)
Even with moderate pulse energies and average powers, ultrashort pulse lasers achieve very high peak powers, whose effect on matter is fundamentally different from that of other light sources. The high electric field strength does not only cause an increase of optically nonlinear effects such as second harmonic generation, but it is also responsible for the “cold“ ablation, which leads to colder plasmas. An investigation of these two circumstances in terms of a simplification of the pulse duration measurement and an improvement of the molecular formation in cooling plasmas is the topic of this work. In this context, it is shown that when selecting suitable process parameters, especially when purposefully defocusing the medium, the use of ultrashort pulse lasers improves the spectroscopy of several emitting molecules such as aluminum oxide. Therefore, their detection is possible even without the time-resolving spectrometers required in literature. In addition, ultrashort pulses enable spatially resolved crystallization of zinc oxide on zinc surfaces prepared by basic means. The resulting wurtzites usually align their c-axis approximately perpendicular to the underlying surface and can be used to generate scattered second harmonics. Fiber-based femtosecond lasers with pulse energies in the microjoule range, pulse durations of a few 100fs and very low maintenance requirements have proven to be a powerful instrument for these purposes. For measuring the pulse duration, the high pulse energy also enables the usage of frequency doublers with much lower conversion eciencies. Despite nonuniform crystal axes, the scattering second harmonic generating aluminum nitride has proven to be particularly suitable for optical autocorrelation. Compared to the commonly used monocrystalline beta-barium borate, the sintered aluminum nitride ceramic plates facilitate the adjustment, simplify the material handling and reduce the expenses by two to three orders of magnitude. The method developed in this work is therefore also suitable for confirmatory measurements of the pulse duration during the production process of such systems – especially when the occurring pulse energies are high or rather too high for beta-barium borate.
Polsearchine: Implementation of a policy-based search engine for regulating information flows
(2013)
Many search engines regulate Internet communication in some way. It is often difficult for end users to notice such regulation, as well as obtaining background information for it. Additionally, the regulation can usually be circumvented easily. This bachelor thesis presents the prototypical metasearch engine "Polsearchine" for addressing these weaknesses. Its regulation is established through InFO, a model for regulating information flows developed by Kasten and Scherp. More precisely, the extension for regulating search engines SEFCO is being used. For retrieving search results, Polsearchine uses an external search engine API. The API can be interchanged easily to make this metasearch engine independent from one specific API.
“Did I say something wrong?” A word-level analysis of Wikipedia articles for deletion discussions
(2016)
This thesis focuses on gaining linguistic insights into textual discussions on a word level. It was of special interest to distinguish messages that constructively contribute to a discussion from those that are detrimental to them. Thereby, we wanted to determine whether “I”- and “You”-messages are indicators for either of the two discussion styles. These messages are nowadays often used in guidelines for successful communication. Although their effects have been successfully evaluated multiple times, a large-scale analysis has never been conducted. Thus, we used Wikipedia Articles for Deletion (short: AfD) discussions together with the records of blocked users and developed a fully automated creation of an annotated data set. In this data set, messages were labelled either constructive or disruptive. We applied binary classifiers to the data to determine characteristic words for both discussion styles. Thereby, we also investigated whether function words like pronouns and conjunctions play an important role in distinguishing the two. We found that “You”-messages were a strong indicator for disruptive messages which matches their attributed effects on communication. However, we found “I”-messages to be indicative for disruptive messages as well which is contrary to their attributed effects. The importance of function words could neither be confirmed nor refuted. Other characteristic words for either communication style were not found. Yet, the results suggest that a different model might represent disruptive and constructive messages in textual discussions better.
Business continuity planning
(2008)
